Management of sigmoid colon volvulus: A Senegalese experience based on 73 cases

Volvulus of the sigmoid colon is rare in West, but main cause colonic obstruction developing countries. Diagnosis based on clinical findings supplemented by standard unprepared abdominal X-rays (UPX). The aim our study to share experience management volvulus order compare results with those literature. We conducted a retrospective and descriptive between 01 January 2008 31 December 2021. Our included 73 patients admitted for volvulus. mean age was 48.8 years extremes 17 86 years. There were 62 men 11 women, giving sex ratio 5.63. Chronic constipation found 63.01% (N=46), occlusive syndrome concerned 100% patients. An X-ray (UXR) performed 93.15% (N=68) showed typical inverted U image cases. Sigmoidectomy followed restoration digestive continuity 84.93% average time taken close stoma 21.8 days, 15 49 days. Post-operative straightforward 63 (86.30%). Morbidity series 9.58%, i.e. 7 patients, mortality 3 4.10%.
